I haven’t even heard of the brewery until today and I couldn’t find any information on this particular beer. From what I can tell, this beer is a normal american pale ale. Heavy in the malt flavoring and mild with hops. Goldenin color and crystal clear. There also appears to be some particulates floating in the beer. I am suggesting that this is yeast. I wonder if they put the bottles through another fermentation to produce the carbonation. Beer also has a good bit of lacing and the head never completely goes away. Overall, this beer is ok. It’s not great, but it is drinkable and I would prefer this over some of the stuff that is available in Starkville. However, this beer does have to compete with Sierra Nevada and TommyKnocker, which this beer doesn’t come close in my opinion. I would recommend that other people try this beer so they have another APA to reference.

I am also going to start giving these beers a letter grades. I usually HATE them. They are usually a sad excuse of a beer because many of the big guys (Miller, AB, etc) have ruined them with their adjunct filled garbage. Usually the beers reek of corn and rice. I’m also not a fan of lagers in general.

HOWEVER, this beer does not reflect the typical american pale lagers that most people would associate with the style. This beer pours the typical APL color, light gold. The beer is very clean and crisp with a moderate amount of carbonation. The one thing that really sets this one apart for me is the hop profile. TommyKnocker has to use the same hope additions for this beer as they do their Pick Axe Pale Ale. Right of the bat you get a very nice clean beer with a hint of citrus and a piny flavor. I prefer Pick Axe, but this beer is a nice alternative if I can’t find Pick Axe. The beer is a low on the carbonation scale. I was unable to finish this beer because a six legged creator decided it also wanted to try it. However, this is one of the best Dogfish beers I have tried. You can really tell Sam Calagione really tries to offset his beers. A great find and is a beer I will pick up next. I have been nursing my Dogfish head beers and maybe that was a bad idea, but I am not real sure just yet. This beer poured a nice deep gold/orange color with about a 3/4 head. The first thing I noticed was the extreme malt profile. Very malty up front with a citrusy taste from the hops. I didn’t get the hop profile was was expecting. I was expecting a lot more bitterness at the end of each sip, but it was just missing. I blame this on the amount of malts used and the high alcohol. This beer does fit the style, but I wish it had more hops. I feel the 60 min IPA had more of a upfront hop profile. I would try this beer again, but next time I will know what to expect. I am also suspecting the 120 min to be on the “OMFGWTFBBQ” in terms of the flavor profile. The beer reeks of coriander and it the taste matches. There is very little malt or wheat notes to be found. There is also little or no hop presence. The beer is thin with a moderate amount of carbonation. Carbonation is also quick to come out of solution.

This is one of the very FEW beers that is tolerable from Coors.

Dogfish Head - Raison D'etre

Brewed by:
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
United States

Style | ABV
Belgian Strong Dark Ale | 8.00% ABV

This beer poured very thick with a very small head. A deep brown/red color. The mouthfeel is on the heavyside. This beer tastes of darker malts, fruits and is very light on the hops. This beer is good, but the alcohol content makes the body of the beer on the heavy side to have more than one. I wasn’t particularly crazy about it. As a lager, this is one of the better ones, but then again, I have never been a huge fan of lagers in general. I am really shocked this is in Mississppi and that only 7 people have given it a review on beeradvocate.com. Since when does Mississippi have a beer that hasn’t been tried buy a huge selection of others in states with less restrictive laws? I would recommend anyone to try this beer. It is very dark in color, on the sweet side, and has a very pleasant maple syrup flavor. A great beer, but I feel it would be hard to pair with something to eat. I will be keeping this on hand. The beer was on tap. Had nice thick creamy head that hung around a while. There was good lacing on the glass. Crystal clear with a deep golden color. Taste was very clean and reminded my of Lazy Magnolia’s golden summer or their southern pecan.
