My Wife and I have two Boston Terriers. Both of our dogs are rescues from the Alabama Boston Terrier Rescue (ABTR). My wife and I are huge supporters of rescues and rescued dogs. We feel that rescue dogs are some of the greatest dogs you could ever have. Rescue dogs may have some initial issues (sickness, emotional problems, or nothing), but with some time and patience, they can be the greatest companions. Rescue dogs are grateful for their new owners and it can clearly be seen in their eyes.

Boston Terriers are very popular in our family. It isn’t uncommon for a house hold to have one or more running around and acting like fools.

abbi
Abbi had a very sad beginning, but we don’t know her full story. Some young college students found her abandoned in a park one night in Atlanta. The responsible adults called ABTR and gave her to them. She was only 6 months old when she was found. She also had very bad cherry eyes that required surgery. Before we got her, ABTR had her fixed and had her cherry eyes fixed, but her eyes were not completely healed. When we got Abbi, she wasn’t available for adoption, wasn’t on their website, and we were trying to adopt another dog. ABTR suggest we take her right before we decided on another dog. ABTR wanted to see her

with a young couple. When we decided to get Abbi, ABTR quickly constructed a convoy of people to help bring her to us. Abbi was in Starkville less than 24 hours after we decided to get her. It took us several months to get the adoption stuff taken care of, but ABTR really took care of us before and after the adoption requirements were finished.

Abbi is really know for her extreme amount of activity. She is either in crazy or sleep mode. There is no in-between with her. Abbi likes to chase squirrels, play with tennis balls, play with her big ball, and chase birds. She is also known for having a 4ft vertical and running the 40 yard dash well under 4 seconds. She loves to be by your side and loves to play with visitors. She also loves playing with dogs bigger than her. She could careless about smaller dogs, unless they are boston terriers.

Walker also had a very rough start. He is 7 years old and he was an owner surrender. Since we had already gone through the process of adopting Abbi, ABTR only needed to contact the vets to make sure Abbi was healthy before we could adopt Walker. When we decided to get Walker, it was a very quick transition from his foster home to here. He slept the whole way here in the car in a friends arms who decided he wanted to come with.

When walker first arrived to our home, he had a big silly grin on his face when he met Abbi. Abbi and him would spend the who day sniffing each other and playing. Later that evening we also discovered that Walker has a very stubborn aggressive side. We were not prepared for this when we got him. He didn’t have aggression towards other dogs, but only aggression torwards those who are telling him what to do. Walker has only been in one skirmish with another dog, but in his defense, the other dog bit him three times before he snapped. I had also warned the owner of the other dog, “ if Walker snaps and puts your dog in his place, I’m not responsible for my dog defending himself.” Walker eventually defended him self. The owners and their dog never really got the clue and we finally asked that them not bring their dog over for fear of their dog being torn to shreds. The other dog had a history of personality issues that never got addressed, biting other dogs and people was one of them.

After a lot of work, Walker is now as calm as a cucumber

and now listens well to my wife and I. After several vet visits, the vets found scar tissue in his some of his muscles. These were signs that he was severely abused before we got him and abuse was probably the main cause of his aggression. We still occasionally have aggression issues, but it’s usually when he’s scared or startled. Walker now spends his days sleeping, laying in the sun, cuddling, and chasing birds. He loves to spend time with people and strangers. He also loves playing with other dogs, especially dogs larger than him.

The next two belong to my mom and step dad.

One of those most influential dogs in our family is Bulldog. Bulldog is now about 9 years old. When my parents first got him as a puppy, he had a bad case of worms from his breeders. Bulldog would make a full recovery, but his growth would be stunted. Bulldog has a “Gene Simmons” tongue because his tongue kept growing but the rest of his body didn’t. Like Abbi, buildog also has an addiction to tennis balls. He loves nursing his toys and cuddling. He’s not nearly into playing with the big dogs like Abbi and Walker, but he does know he’s a Boston Terrier and will play with other Bostons. Bulldog loves playing with visitors and playing fetch. He also likes playing big ball. This is the one dog that started the Boston Terrier frenzy in our family.

rudy
The newest addition to the family is Rudy. Rudy is a 6 month old puppy. Rudy is a handful and loves terrorizing my mother. Like Abbi, he loves playing with big ball and is learning to play fetch. Bulldog is being a good teacher. Like the rest of the Boston Terriers, he loves playing with other dogs and loves playing with other Boston Terriers.
